Almerez Futsal Academy emerged winners of the pre-season Four Corner Futsal Tournament at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Sports Complex recently.
The local futsal club collected seven points after three matches to finish top of the group ahead of runners-up Kasuka FC, third place Shah United FC and fourth place BIBD SRC.
Kasuka collected six points while Shah United picked up four points and BIBD ended the tournament without a point.
The opening matches saw Almerez cruise to a 3-0 victory over Kasuka after goals from Ajim, Izzan and Syazwan.
In the other match, Shah United kept in touch with the group leaders via goal difference after they edged BIBD SRC 1-0 with Fardi scoring the only goal of the game.
A thrilling 2-2 draw between Almerez and Shah United gave Kasuka hope heading into the final game. A double by Siraj gave Kasuka the much-needed three points against BIBD who were chasing their first points.
Almerez’s goals came from Muajam and Mirul while Shah’s scorers were Halim and Fardi.
However, a 4-0 victory at the expense of winless BIBD gave Almerez a deserved title as Muajam, Ajiq, Gnol and Radhi all found the back of the net.
Kasuka climbed to second place after a 2-1 victory over Shah United, who dropped to third while BIBD remained at the bottom of the table.
Mucin and Dinie were on the score-sheet for Kasuka while Haz scored for Shah United.
Meanwhile, Awangku Mohd Amirul Haziq of Almerez Futsal Academy was named the Best Player while his teammate Iman Zul Hakim was named the Best Goalkeeper.
Three players – Haji Fardy of Shah United, Muajam of Almerez and Siraj of Kasuka – finished joint top scorer with two goals. The futsal clubs were preparing for the domestic season with a national league scheduled to be held in June.
Registered clubs will have to go through a qualifying stage to book a spot in the league. The qualifying stage is expected to be held for two weeks.
The national futsal league was last held in 2017, won by Malaysian team Kuantan Rangers.
