AITI warns public of hoax calls

The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) has received several reports from subscribers, who have been receiving calls from unverified numbers claiming to be from various government agencies or businesses.

As part of AITI’s efforts to protect consumers, subscribers are advised to be extra cautious when answering calls from unfamiliar local or international numbers, particularly when not expecting any calls; never give personal or financial details over the phone including identification number and bank account number; and be careful with following instructions given during suspicious calls, such as “Press 1”.

Subscribers are also advised to obtain details of the caller before hanging up the call and calling the government agencies’ or business’ official number to validate the call received.

Scammers often use number spoofing, where they mask real phone numbers when calling potential victims.

AITI said these calls are a form of fraudulent activity with the goal of stealing money or information and can often be from a number that seems legitimate.
