A review of the maximum age of eligibility for local government scholarship applicants looking to pursue degree programmes at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) was suggested by Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Haji Mohimin bin Haji Johari @ Jahari at the sixth day of the 17th LegCo session yesterday.
He said Brunei had imposed an age barrier for local degree scholarship applicants of being not above 30-years-old, while those above 30 must fork out their own tuition fees or be privately funded.
“Therefore, if you are not within the age range, you are not eligible to apply,” he said, adding that academic integrity is a life-long practice that will bring benefits to society and the country as a whole.
Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman agreed with the notion, adding that a thorough review will be conducted on the matter.
He pointed out that the national economy is experiencing a budget deficit, and hinted that it can be implemented in the future.
