AFF president lauds efforts in managing COVID-19

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, Deputy President of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) attended the virtual 27th AFF Congress Meeting 2020 recently.

In the meeting, AFF President Major General Khiev Sameth lauded the 12 member associations affiliated under the regional football governing body for acting decisively in managing the pandemic.

The president said, “Since the onset of the pandemic, AFF worked closely with our member associations (MAs) to enhance their readiness and capacity to withstand disruption from a financial, operational and strategic standpoint.

“We had among other things developed a COVID-19 manual to assist our members mitigate actual or potential issues in their countries.

“I want to commend our MAs together with the AFF Secretariat for acting decisively and taking the necessary measures to manage this pandemic.”

The pandemic has severely impacted the region and prompted re-scheduling or cancellation of national leagues and activities.

Major General Khiev Sameth said, “We are confident conditions will improve soon and we can get back to organising competitions and activities again.”

The president praised the youth teams controlled by the respective member associations especially the six nations that qualified for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-19 Championship.

The AFF will be represented by Indonesia, Cambodia, Australia, Vietnam, Laos and Malaysia in the under-19 meet, which is scheduled to be held in Uzbekistan next year.

He also applauded the AFF Secretariat, headed by General Secretary Winston Lee, for the improvements that have significantly enhanced the management and commercial value of AFF.

“We focussed on professionalising AFF including our competitions portfolio review, strategy development, commercial drive, productivity improvement, technology enablement, internal governance and resource optimisation.”

Recently, the AFF teamed up with the Qatar Football Association (QFA) to organise a two-day workshop titled ‘Bouncing Back from COVID-19’. AFF will be organising similar workshops and programmes for the benefit of the members.

National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) President Pengiran Haji Matusin bin Pengiran Haji Matasan also attended the meeting.
