It is recommended that every civil servant adopts a professional approach towards their work, including decision-making and policy formulation to ensure timely implementation of all national development plans (RKN), said Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Abdul Aziz bin Haji Hamdan during his motion of thanks yesterday.

The 19th LegCo session also saw Yang Berhormat Abdul Aziz stating that exhibiting a high level of professionalism can create a positive impression on the public, showcasing civil servants’ commitment and dedication towards their entrusted tasks with regards to the importance of professionalism among civil servants.

“This professionalism can enhance the public’s confidence and perception of the government’s service delivery system, ultimately contributing towards the achievement of Brunei Vision 2035 goals,” added the LegCo member.

In aspects of work culture transformation, Yang Berhormat Abdul Aziz said cultivating an attitude of professionalism is needed in every government department.

“Although the cultural transformation will not be done in a day or through courses and workshops, it requires determination, commitment and continuous effort from all parties from the top to the lowest level of an organisation.

“The country needs officers and staff who are innovative and creative in thinking about what is best. It is essential for every government employee to continuously enhance their skills by being creative in acquiring current knowledge, innovative in seeking opportunities to explore new avenues, and proactive in acquiring knowledge to improve their proficiency.”

He noted that this practice should be ingrained as a culture and adopted by the staff. “By applying Bruneian values, all achievements can align with the authentic Bruneian talent pathway,” he added.

The LegCo member also voiced his strong belief that balanced development across all sectors should be carried out with a national approach to achieve all developmental objectives.

“Developed countries are not only successful in achieving physical development but also possess highly cultured societies with advanced thinking and quality lifestyles,” said Yang Berhormat Abdul Aziz, adding that it is undesirable for the Sultanate to have world-class infrastructure but a third-class national mind-set.

He stated that this implies that the progress of people and society must be parallel to physical development, where all developmental agendas should remain relevant, keeping pace with changing times.

This balanced development approach can be extended to regional progress plans, where the development plan for Tutong District must align with other districts. Ensuring balanced progress should be the primary focus of the government to foster sustainable development.

In aspects of perfect planning, the LegCo member also voiced out that there are no shortcuts to success, but the most important key to it is trusting in Allah the Almighty and continuing to work hard, ensuring all efforts and initiatives can be implemented one by one before moving on to the next phase, to not hastily draft something that lacks direction, and any commendable task that has yet to be initiated should be pursued with utmost confidence and patience.

“It is my hope that the fiscal year 2023-2024 supply bill, which has been presented and discussed, will be effectively managed, ensuring that every penny spent benefits and enriches the lives of the people. Such efforts will foster a state of sustainable and stable progress for Brunei Darussalam,” said the LegCo member.
