Alumni of Perdana Wazir English School (PWES), now known as Perdana Wazir Secondary School (SMPW), recently attended a reunion in conjunction with the school’s 50th anniversary.
Organised by Class of 1969 and 1970, the reunion was attended by 80 alumni and principal Cheong Poh Lian.
Among them were Legislative Council members Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pendikar Alam Dato Paduka Seri Haji Hasrin bin Dato Paduka Haji Sabtu and Acting Penghulu of Mukim Labi 1 Yang Berhormat Hanapi bin Mohd Siput.
Event Chairman Dr Haji Mohd Hatta bin Haji Zainal Abidin in his opening speech, expressed his joy over the reception of the reunion despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first batch of students at the PWES also said being part of the memories he has of the school is priceless. “Since the graduation in 1972-1973, we had gone our separate ways; with some continuing our education at SOAS college, Bandar Seri Begawan, and others overseas,” he said.
He noted that it helps provide an avenue to catch up with friends of the past, to reminisce about school years.
Similarly, School Principal Pengiran Hajah Rahmah binti Pengiran Haji Abas, commended the former students for holding the reunion, during the school’s milestone year.
She said, “Fifty years is a long time as an education institute in Brunei Darussalam.
“Over the years, the school has produced some of the brightest students that have gone on to lead the nation.”
She also noted that in holding onto the school’s motto of ‘Never Give Up’; the school will always be supportive of initiatives and efforts that serve to benefit students, both former and current.
Meanwhile, former principal Cheong recalled her time at the school as both a student and a principal as well as the achievements made along the way which helped to shape the school.
Later, a short video was presented on the history of the school, photos of the former students and short clips of alumni residing in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, who were unable to attend due to travel restrictions.
Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pendikar Alam Dato Paduka Seri Haji Hasrin presented special commemorative plaques to former teachers for their contributions.
The event also saw a cake-cutting ceremony and a tour of the display of memorabilia from their era.
