Former radio announcers and engineers attached to Radio Brunei, Radio Television Brunei (RTB) from 1957 to 2020 gathered for a Tahlil ceremony and reunion at Aneka Rasa Restaurant in Kiulap.

Former RTB Director cum guest of honour Dato Paduka Haji Awang Alidin bin Haji Awang Othman launched the former radio announcers and engineers as well as former radio managers of Radio Brunei poster, as well as the Facebook page for Suara Emas Brunei.

The Facebook page features the profiles of former Radio Brunei broadcasters since 1957 and pictures for the reference of future generations.

Event chairperson Hajah Zainab binti Haji Zainal Abidin shared the background of the establishment of radio broadcasting and services in the country, as well as the programmes broadcasted by Radio Brunei.

“Names like Yusof Kadir, Ramlee Mohd Said, Anuar Haji Abdul Hamid, Abdul Wahab Muhammad, Awangku Othman bin Pengiran Haji Ismail, Dayangku Intan, Dayangku Mariam, Zainab Haji Zainal Abidin and Maidi Sulaiman were synonymous with the radio services. Their radio presence was unique and captivating.

“Radio Brunei is the pulse, disseminating information to the community at various levels with the radio announcers having strong fan bases. Although no longer on the air, their names remain in the hearts of listeners from those times,” she said

The opening remarks followed with a Tahlil ceremony and Doa Selamat led by Pengiran Haji Sulaiman bin Pengiran Haji Tuah.

Radio Brunei began its broadcasting services on May 2, 1957, and this year marks its 63rd anniversary. The reunion was held in conjunction with the World Radio Day (WRD) celebrated every February 13, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.
