Over 80 fall ill at Imelda Marcos’ birthday party

MANILA (Xinhua) – More than 80 people fell ill during former president’s wife Imelda Marcos’ 90th birthday celebration yesterday in Pasig city located along the eastern border of Metro Manila, police said.

Pasig City Police Chief Colonel Rizalito Gapas said the victims who suffered abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting were taken to different hospitals.

Initial investigations showed suspected food poisoning after people ate a popular Filipino meat dish cooked in soy sauce, vinegar and garlic. A further investigation is underway to determine the food that sickened the guests.

Gapas said an estimated 2,500 people attended the event held at a sports arena.

Imelda Marcos, the wife of former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, turned 90 on Tuesday.
