SEVENTY-NINE house fires with an estimated loss of over BND2 million and 39 building fires with a total loss of over BND5 million were recorded last year, Acting Director of the Fire and Rescue Department Lim Hock Guan said.

He made these statements during a dialogue session at the department’s conference room on Saturday.

The department also received 64 emergency calls for vehicle fires with an estimated loss of BND349,100.

Among the common causes of fire are cooking left unattended, electrical appliances, disposing of cigarette butts, domestic gas leak and dubious acts of malice.

The department also received 587 emergency calls on fallen trees involving eight vehicles and 26 houses last year.

The department also reminded the Chinese community to practise fire safety during the Chinese New Year celebration.

Meanwhile, the department recorded five drowning cases last year compared to four in 2017.

In early January this year, two drowning-related deaths were recorded, said Lim Hock Guan.

The department reminded the public to not enter strong currents during beach activities.

Boat operators and passengers were also reminded to wear safety jackets and to switch on lamps at night or during bad weather.
