A TOTAL of 63 participants from 18 local and regional gyms will head to the rings to decide who will be the ultimate champion in the second regional amateur boxing and kickboxing tournament titled ‘STRIKE: Redemption’ taking place from March 9-10 at the Jerudong Park Amphitheatre.

Hosted by STRIKE Promotions, the tournament is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and sanctioned by the International Sports Kickboxing Association and the Brunei Darussalam Boxing Association.

To prevent any unwelcome incident from happening, the organiser has hired security personnel and the two-day event will also see police presence.

In addition, the people involved in the incident during last year’s event will be barred from entering the premises.

According to the statement from STRIKE Promotions, regional gyms participating in the event include Kinabalu Fighter Martial Art and Fitness Centre, CoachPro from the Philippines, Team Karabaw and Sabah Top Team.

The event will kick off with an amateur kickboxing tournament on March 9 followed by the main event which will take place in the evening on that day. On March 10, the Brunei Darussalam Boxing Association will host its amateur boxing tournament.

The main event will feature eight pro fights and feature local fighters Aaron Lee of Project Mayhem, Wali Rahman of Silverback Muay Thai and Saufy Jaman of Nak Muay Fight Gym.

Out of the eight bouts, four will be title fights and they will be for the Borneo ISKA 57KG K-1 title, STRIKE 73KG K-1 title, STRIKE 56KG K-1 title and the STRIKE 60KG K-1 title.

The event will be unlike any other as the main event will feature special needs athlete Sunny ‘The Silencer’ Sabornido, the first and only hearing impaired Muay Thai fighter from Malaysia.

The event’s objective is to raise public awareness on ensuring inclusiveness and equality of persons with disabilities as well as inspire them to pursue martial arts. To support the cause, the promotion has partnered with Setia Motors Sdn Bhd, BruPay Sdn Bhd and Jerudong Park Country Club (JPCC) to invite special needs organisations such as Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam, Centre for Children with Special Needs (KACA) and National Association for the Hearing Impaired (OKP) to attend the event.

In addition, STRIKE and BruPay Sdn Bhd, the payment provider partner for the event, will hold a donation campaign in support of Pusat Ehsan from March 2-31. Members of the public can submit donations through the BruPay app by scanning a shareable QR code, which can be found on BruPay’s and STRIKE’s social media pages.

Meanwhile, Setia Motors, the official car partner for ‘STRIKE: Redemption’ will also have a special promotion from now until April 30 where anyone who purchases any Hyundai models can stand a chance to win a brand new Hyundai i30.
