THE Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (ITQSHHB) officially welcomed 60 new students in a ceremony held yesterday at the institute’s building on Jalan Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha.
The State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned attended the ceremony as the guest of honour.
The students, 21 males and 39 females, are part of the new intake for the 1440 Hijrah / 2019 academic session.
In his welcoming remarks, ITQSHHB Acting Principal Pengiran Haji Amiruddin bin Pengiran Haji Damit explained that a total of 379 applications into the institute were submitted, and 270 candidates – 138 males and 132 females – were selected to undergo the second phase interview from this pool.
“From interview process, only 60 candidates were finally selected. These comprised students from Arabic Preparatory School, Al-Falaah School, and government and private schools,” he said.
“The Ta’aruf (orientation) week aimed to prepare students by inculcating into them a culture of memorising Al-Quran and having balance in their academic undertakings, adjusting themselves to hostel life, meeting new friends, and learning bid’ah by immersing themselves with Al-Quran for the rest of their lives.”
Among the activities carried out during the orientation week were the performing of mass prayers, a motivational talk entitled Keperibadian Penghafaz Al-Quran, an Al-Quran memorisation workshop, Murattal, Jawi caligraphy, Dikir Syarafil Anam recitation, an Al-Quran reading competition, and a Murattal and dawn lecture assisted by former students of ITQSHHB. The acting principal highlighted the institute’s achievements, such as its Year 9 and Year 10 students’ successful completion of the memorisation of 30 Juzuks of Al-Quran and passing their Tasmi’e Test of 30 Juzuks, 20 and 10 Juzuks.
Other achievements include the institute’s category A (Science Stream) students completing the memorisation of 30 Juzuks, a significant feat considering their syllabus only required them to complete the memorisation of 15 Juzuks of Al-Quran.
Before ending his remarks, Pengiran Haji Amiruddin advised the new intake to always enliven their hearts with Al-Quran, maintain good discipline, respect their parents, and perform their daily prayers.
During the ceremony, Mushaf Al-Quran were presented to the new students by the State Mufti. This was followed by the students taking their oath.
Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Religious) at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Haji Seruddin bin Haji Timbang and Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali Rector Dr Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal.
