Over 50 residents of Mukim Melilas and Mukim Sukang from Belait District attended a Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) programme conducted by the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) under the Ministry of Home Affairs at Mukim Sukang’s multipurpose hall on Saturday.

Legislative Council member and Acting Penghulu of Mukim Labi Yang Berhormat Hanapi bin Mohd Siput was present, along with acting penghulu, village heads, and members of the Mukim and Village Consultative Council (MPMK) from the surrounding areas of both mukims.

The event was aimed at introducing the NDMC, its functions and goals as well as outlining the major roles of agencies involved in disaster management including the Belait District Office, the Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) and the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS).

The event also saw attendees participating in town watching, hazard mapping and a demonstration on extinguishing fires. Acting Belait District Officer Mohammad Yassin bin Haji Ahmed handed certificates of appreciation to attendees, facilitators and members of the Four Wheel Drive Association of Brunei Darussalam.

NDMC Director Colonel (Rtd) Muhd Harrith Rashidi bin Haji Muhd Jamin also presented keys to the container that houses the NDMC’s logistical equipment to Mohammad Yassin, signalling the end of the event.

The NDMC, through the programme, aims to continue cooperating with penghulus and village heads to ensure the residents’ safety remains the top priority.
