Some 48 papers were presented at the two-day International Conference on Business, Management and Information Systems (ICBMIS) 2019 at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) which concluded on Thursday.
Participants from Brunei Bangladesh, Malaysia, the Philippines, Nigeria, Pakistan and Ghana presented the papers.
Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research) of UTB Professor Dr Mohamed Hasnain Isa was the guest of honour at the closing ceremony.
The first ICBMIS concluded with the presentation of the Best Paper Awards. The Determinants of Nascent Venture Performance in Malaysia by Umi Kartini Rashid, Rusnifaezah Musa, Juzaimi Nasuredin, Wan Fauziah Wan Yusoff, Siti Sarah Omar, Noor Aslinda Abu Seman, Nur Aniza Quantaniah Jusoh and Noreina Kepal @ Nasir from Malaysia received the Overall Best Paper.
While Measurement of Social Capital and Welfare for Sustainable Development of Malaysia by Gazi Nurul Islam, Nik Abdullah and Syed Agil from Malaysia; and The Impact of Organizational Learning on SME Performance: Mediating Effect of Competitive Strategy by Chin Han Wuen, Fahmi Ibrahim and Kabiru Jinjir Ringim from Brunei received the Special Mention Awards.
Prior to the closing ceremony, a second keynote address, titled Small nations, Big ambitions. How can Brunei leverage on innovation and entrepreneurship?, was delivered by Associate Director of KPMG Digital Village Talal Ikhwan from Singapore. With over eight years of management consulting experience having focus on innovation strategy and business model innovation, his latest projects include assessing the FinTech ecosystem in Brunei, setting-up an innovation hub in Southeast Asia and developing a blockchain-based land registry in the South Pacific.
A panel discussion on Developing Innovation Ecosystem for Business Growth was also held.
Earlier on Wednesday, Acting Vice-Chancellor of UTB Haji Ady Syarmin bin Haji Mohd Taib, who was the guest of honour, officiated the opening ceremony at the university’s Lecture Theatre 2, Library Complex.
The conference, themed ‘Sustainable Innovation in Business, Management and Information Systems’, was organised by the UTB School of Business in partnership with Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and the Oxford Intellect.

Dean of UTB School of Business and Chairman of ICBMIS 2019 Haji Mohamed Saleem bin Haja Nazmudeen delivered his welcoming remark followed by a remark from Haji Ady Syarmin. It proceeded with the launching of the conference.
Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the Ministry of Education Dr Chin Wei Keh; UTB principal officers; guests; sponsors; participants; lecturers; staff; and students were present.
The first keynote address on Regulation, Economic Efficiency and Growth was delivered by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Oxford Competition Economics and Vice-President of the Competition Commission at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Mexico Dr Victor Pavon-Villamayor.
He is an economist with expertise in antitrust, regulation and quantitative techniques for economic analysis.
It proceeded with a presentation on ‘Internet of Assistant’ by Senior Researcher at Big Data Analytics Lab of the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology in Japan Dr Minh Son Dao.
Two workshops were also held at the Training and Fawaz Room at the Library Complex of the university before the opening ceremony.
The workshops titled Advancing your Research Aims: Text-based Analysis of Social Media and Towards Building an Innovation and Entrepreneurship Ecosystem in Brunei: The Way Forward, were conducted by Chief Executive of Oxford Intellect Dr Imran Alvi and Professor Dr Kamariah binti Ismail from UTB School of Business.
The ICBMIS aims at reflecting on the business management innovation, finance and technological development for the organisation and other relevant normative, empirical, and theoretical concerns, implementation, strategy, management and policy that are distinctive to Fintech and entrepreneurial innovation and development.
