Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) members, comprising 20 BSPCares volunteers, planted 382 kapur paya saplings at the Anduki Forest Reserve recently.
The initiative was a collaboration between BSP and the Forestry Department with support from BSP’s LiveWIRE Alumni, Sphiere.
According to BSP, the kapur paya sapling was chosen because it is native to the area and listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List. Part of the forest reserve was damaged by past fires, motivating the reforestation effort.
Kapur paya is also grown in BSP’s nursery as part of a three-year project, which began in 2019, to ensure enough saplings are available for planting in degraded areas.
The tree-planting activity also supports the Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy’s Strategy 2 Forest Cover, which seeks to plant 500,000 new trees by 2035, with BSP planting over 1,000 trees in various locations across the Belait District in 2024 alone. – Daniel Lim
