THE Magistrate’s Court yesterday handed down fines to 37 Vietnamese men who pleaded guilty to conducting illegal fishing in Brunei waters.
The defendants, aged 18-52, were found on a Vietnam-registered vessel within Brunei waters between 6am and 6.30am on May 27, 2018 when a maritime patrol team from KDB Darussalam boarded the vessel to conduct an inspection.
The team found fishing gear, GPS and radio communication devices as well as 2,710 kilogrammes cuttlefish in the vessel. Vessel master Pham Van Hanh was ordered to pay a BND10,000 fine, or serve 10 months’ jail in default of payment.
The other 36 fishing crew, each received a BND500 fine, or one month’s jail in default of payment.
Senior Magistrate Azrimah binti Haji Abdul Rahman ordered for the vessel and fishing equipment to be forfeited to the state.
DPP Raihan Nabilah binti Ahmad Ghazali represented the Public Prosecutor in the case.
