Two students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) won the 2020 Dracula Digital Competition top prize in the Dracula Film Festival held from October 14-18.
The ‘Dracula Digital’ trophy and E200 prize were awarded to the short film Image (2020) by Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) students Sahriz Azim Sahrun and Sahira Shahminan, majoring in Design and Creative Industries (DCI), who teamed up with Faculty of Science (FOS) student Philip Lim Shen Huei.
The film was screened to open the award gala of the 5th Dracula International Film Festival in Brasov, Romania on October 18.
The event was a worldwide smartphone short film competition open to contestants aged 16 to 29.
Participants had to use the words ‘Thumb’, ‘Oak’ and ‘Iron’ creatively to make a three-minute short film in mystery, horror, or fantasy genre using smartphones within three days, and upload it on YouTube to be judged by three professional filmmakers in Romania.
A total of 14 short films were submitted. Another UBD team led by FASS DCI student Farhan Nizam was also among the finalists.
This is the first time for UBD students to participate in a trendy film competition using smartphones to engage in visual storytelling.
Bruneian indie filmmaker Abdul Zainidi also gave an online master class workshop titled ‘Film in Your Pocket’ during the 5th Dracula Film Festival as part of the Dracula Digital official programme.
It was held to inspire and facilitate the finalist teams to put together their creative ideas and pull off their smartphone-made short films.
