The effort to quit smoking starts from the smokers themselves, said Mashhor Group of Companies Deputy Director and Mashhor Waste Management CEO Malai Shamil Faris bin Dr Malai Haji Abdul Hamid during a smoking awareness campaign organised by Mashhor General Contractor Sdn Bhd (MGCSB) in Seria yesterday.

“To ensure that we are able to ensure the company attains a smoke-free status, it starts from you (the staff members of the company),” he said.

“Not only does it make you a better person from both a health and financial standpoints, it also complies with our commitment in working with Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP).” More than 50 staff members of MGCSB were present and briefed on the Tobacco Order by Health Education Officer Arni Nur Aqilah binti Bakar from the Health Promotion Centre (HPC), Ministry of Health (MoH).

Malai Shamil Faris hoped the campaign will not only disseminate information among the staff members, but also help inspire them to quit the habit.

The HPC also conducted talks and counselling for attendees, led by Senior Medical Officer Dr Siti Rosemawati binti Haji Md Yussof.

Meanwhile, Corporate HSSE Manager Mohd Rizal bin Dr Haji Abdul Latif said the campaign served to promote a healthy lifestyle and clean environment for the company’s customers, employees and clients by protecting them from second-hand smoke.

“It is also in compliance with the MoH regulations and policies that prohibit smoking at our workplaces, work sites and public areas,” he said.
