ASEAN leaders will hold the 37th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in virtual meetings via a series of video conferences, amid widespread concerns and precautionary measures over the COVID-19 pandemic situation globally.
His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam will join the summits from today until November 15.
The ASEAN Summit themed ‘Cohesive and Responsive ASEAN’ will be chaired by Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Nguyen Xuân Phúc as the Chair of ASEAN for 2020.
Discussions will be held on a number of agendas such as the need for ASEAN to strengthen its unity and cooperation to overcome COVID-19 challenges; reinforcing the role of ASEAN in developing economic relations and connectivity; enhancing the efficiency of ASEAN in promoting partnerships in the global community; and maintaining cooperation towards safeguarding peace and stability regionally and internationally. The ASEAN leaders last met in a virtual meeting during the 36th ASEAN Summit in June.
Besides the 37th ASEAN Summit, related summits will also be held with leaders of ASEAN dialogue partners comprising the People’s Republic of China; Japan; Republic of India; Republic of Korea; the United States; Australia; New Zealand; the Russian Federation; and the United Nations.
