MYR12.3M worth of drugs seized by Penang police from January

GEORGE TOWN (BERNAMA) – Penang police seized various types of drugs, ecstasy pills, ketum juice and leaves as well as cannabis worth about MYR12.3 million in various operations from the beginning of the year until November 8, an increase of around MYR100,000 compared to the same period last year.

Penang Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) Chief ACP Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah said among the seizures were 1,209kgs of various traditional and synthetic drugs, 72,756 pills (ecstasy pills and psychotropic pills), 7,081.26 litres of ketum juice, 995.65kgs of ketum leaves as well as seven cannabis stems.

He said during the period, 8,587 people were detained in connection with drug cases, among them 4,488 people for drugs possession, 2,011 suppliers, 1,609 addicts, 326 people were arrested repeatedly for drugs possession and investigated under Section 39C of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and 153 people investigated under the Special Preventive Measures (LLPK).

“The number of arrests related to drugs dropped by 23 per cent or 1,956 people compared to the corresponding period last year, this is among others due to the implementation of the movement control order (MCO) since last March.”
