Local gets jail, whipping for theft at mosque

The Intermediate Court sentenced a local man to 32 months’ jail and five strokes of the cane on November 2, after he pleaded guilty to three charges of theft from a place of worship.

Azman bin Muhammad, 27, was a frontliner at the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Kampong Katimahar, whose duties included opening the gate/doors, conducting temperature checks on congregants, and cleaning the premises.

According to Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Hajah Siti Mu’izzah binti Haji Sabli, the defendant stole money from a donation box inside the mosque during in the late or early hours of October 12, 17 and 19, which he spent on personal necessities.

Judge Muhammed Faisal bin Pehin Dato Haji Kefli further heard that it was at 4.34am on October 19, when another frontliner arrived to find the mosque gate open, prompting him to alert the Imam.

CCTV footage showed the defendant taking money from the donation box, and committing the same offence on two more occasions.

The Imam filed a police report, leading to the defendant’s arrest.
