Iran reports 8,772 new COVID-19 cases, 654,936 in total

TEHRAN (Xinhua) – Iran announced on Thursday 8,772 new COVID-19 infections confirmed in the past 24 hours, bringing the total confirmed cases to 654,936 in the country, official news agency IRNA reported.

Spokeswoman for Iran’s Ministry of Health and Medical Education Sima Sadat Lari said at her daily briefing that 406 people with COVID-19 lost their lives between Wednesday and Thursday, which takes the total death toll of the epidemic in the country to 36,985.

Meanwhile, 2,789 of the newly infected had to be hospitalised, according to Lari.

As of Thursday, 505,287 patients have recovered or been released from Iranian hospitals, but 5,472 others remain in critical condition in intensive care units.

So far, 5,110,752 laboratory tests for COVID-19 have been carried out in Iran.

The risk of infection is currently high in 27 out of the 31 Iranian provinces, while the other four are on yellow alert.

Following the COVID-19 resurgence in Iran over the past month, the health authorities have reintroduced strict protective measures and compulsory use of face masks in the capital Tehran and other major cities of the country as well as some restrictions on intercity travels.
