Brunei joins ASEAN meet on cybersecurity coordination

The inaugural meeting of the ASEAN Cybersecurity Coordinating Committee (ASEAN Cyber-CC) took place on Thursday, co-hosted by the ASEAN Secretariat with Lao PDR as Chair of the ASEAN Digital Senior Officials Meeting (ADGSOM).

Interim Commissioner of Cyber Security Brunei (CSB) Shamsul Bahri bin Haji Kamis led the Brunei delegates at the online meeting at the Ministry of Transport and Info-communications (MTIC).

Officers from the MTIC, CSB and Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) also participated.

Representatives of ASEAN member states exchanged status updates on the national cybersecurity development in their respective countries, which included national strategies, governance mechanisms and initiatives.

The ASEAN Cyber-CC Work Plan also discussed the relevant initiatives and proposed cross sectoral activities that the ASEAN Cyber-CC will undertake annually and in the long term.

The establishment of the ASEAN Cyber-CC was agreed upon during the 19th ASEAN Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministers Meeting (TELMIN) held in Vientiane, Lao PDR on October 24-25, 2019.

The 4th ASEAN Ministerial Conference on Cybersecurity (AMCC) on October 2, 2019 in Singapore subsequently agreed to recommend the establishment of an ASEAN Cross-Sectoral Coordinating Committee with representatives from relevant sectoral bodies to strengthen cross-sectoral regional coordination on cybersecurity.

The annual meeting serves to promote cross-sectoral and cross-pillar cooperation among ASEAN sectoral bodies on efforts to strengthen cybersecurity in the region and such a model is hoped to be replicated in Brunei Darussalam.
