Theft suspected behind missing manhole cover

An inspection by Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) and Unified National Networks Sdn Bhd (UNN) found that part of a missing telecommunication manhole cover was illegally removed or stolen, which led to an incident that went viral on social media in relation to a night cyclist being injured and hospitalised. To prevent another incident, UNN immediately installed a new manhole cover in its place.

AITI reminded the public, as stated under Section 49 of the Telecommunications Order 2001, that any person who wilfully removes, destroys or damages any installation or plant used for telecommunications, shall be guilty of an offence and be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding BND50,000, and imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or both. In the event of any such suspicious activities, AITI request the public to report to the police.
