Meeting focusses on regional cybersecurity

Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof, in his capacity as the Minister-in-charge of Brunei’s cybersecurity, attended Singapore International Cyber Week (SICW) 2020 and the 5th ASEAN Ministerial Conference on Cybersecurity (AMCC) via video conferencing recently.

Themed ‘Cooperation in a post-COVID future’, the SICW 2020 was opened by Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat on October 6, who also launched the Safer Cyberspace Masterplan 2020.

During the SICW Ministerial Roundtable opening session, Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib participated as a speaker on the topic ‘Navigating the Post COVID-19 New Normal: Threats to International Peace and Security in Cyberspace’.

He shared Brunei Darussalam’s perspective on the efforts towards ensuring a safer cyberspace, including the need for a consolidated approach addressing the interrelated aspects of technology, people and process in cybersecurity.

During the 5th AMCC, participants noted on the progress made in developing a long-term regional action plan for norms of responsible state behaviour in cyberspace. This will be taken up in detail through the newly formed ASEAN Cybersecurity Coordinating Committee.

The 5th AMCC also highlighted the importance of the protection of Critical Information Infrastructures (CII) from cyber threats to ensure a safe and secure regional cyberspace.

Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib also shared updates on the cybersecurity landscape of Brunei Darussalam, which includes the strengthening of coordination and governance on cybersecurity at national level through the formation of National Cybersecurity Committee and the establishment of Cyber Security Brunei (CSB) as the national cybersecurity agency.

Also present during the virtual conference were Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Infocommunications, Cybersecurity, Strategy and Corporate) at the MTIC Haji Hairul Mohd Daud bin Haji Abdul Karim, Interim Commissioner of Cyber Security Brunei Shamsul Bahri bin Haji Kamis and MTIC senior officials.
