Health hazards of drug abuse highlighted

VAM®BRN Sdn Bhd personnel learnt about the health hazards of drugs and the law against misuse of drugs in the second series of drug awareness talks at the VAM®BRN Sdn Bhd premises in Salambigar Industrial Park yesterday.

The talk was organised in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). The talk saw 93 employees attending two separate sessions on September 22 and yesterday.

Assistant Narcotics Officer Simaa binti Haji Hamidon delivered the talk. Assistant Narcotics Officer Muhammad Rudy Anis bin Abdullah Gudin also attended.

Simaa touched on syabu or methamphetamine, marijuana or ganja, ecstasy and inhalant or glue sniffing.

She cited some of the laws under the Misuse of Drugs Act (MDA) namely Section 21 (1) (a) of the MDA, Chapter 27 where NCB officers have the authority to enter and search any place, anywhere anytime to check drug abuse.

Meanwhile, under Section 6 (a) of the MDA, Chapter 27, anyone found possessing a controlled drug will face a maximum imprisonment of 10 years or maximum fine of BND20,000 or both. For the second or subsequent offence, the punishment is a minimum of two years’ imprisonment.

For possessing drug paraphernalia, a person can be charged under Section 7 of the MDA, Chapter 27 and can face a maximum of three years’ imprisonment or a maximum fine of BND10,000 or both. For the offence of cultivating cannabis, opium or coca plant, if found guilty under Section 7 of the MDA, Chapter 27, the offender can face a minimum of three years to maximum of 20 years’ imprisonment or a minimum BND5,000 to a maximum BND40,000 fine or both.

The failure to provide urine samples is an offence under Section 28 (2) of the MDA, Chapter 27 and can face a maximum fine of BND5,000.

The talk ended with a question-and-answer session. VAM®BRN Managing Director Hiroyuki Hatanaka and senior management also attended the talk.
