The Intermediate Court handed a sentence of three years and four months’ jail with two strokes of the cane to a Bangladeshi man for breaking into a shop, yesterday.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Sabrina binti Haji Mahmud’s facts of the case stated that at 10.45pm on September 22, Safikul Islam was outside a friend’s house near a hardware shop in Kampong Pintu Malim.
The defendant walked to the shop’s storage area and climbed over the wall to gain access into the ceiling. The defendant made a hole and pushed open the ceiling to access the shop.
Inside, the defendant, aided by the torch light from his phone as the shop was dark, opened the drawers of the table and stole three mobile phones. On the upper floor, he took coins amounting to BND7.
He then took a ladder and climbed back into the ceiling to make his way out.
On September 23, the shop manager arrived at work with three of his staff and discovered that the mobile phones and cash were missing. They filed a police report and checked the CCTV.
On the night of September 25, the shop staff saw the defendant nearby and apprehended him. He was handed to the police.
