A chef de partie was ordered by the Magistrate’s Court to settle a BND1,000 fine after he pleaded guilty to stealing from the hotel kitchen, yesterday.

Mohammad Amirul Azizi bin Abdullah Tinggi, 34, will have to serve a week’s jail, in default of payment. Deputy Public Prosecutor Hajah ‘Adzimah Mukarramah binti Haji Salleh informed the court that the defendant assisted the sous chef and was working in the butcher division from 8am to 5pm, on September 28.

At 4.30pm, the defendant opened a chiller where he saw four packets of chicken wings, each weighing two kilogrammes, hid them in his backpack and locked the chiller behind him.

Later, as he walked towards his car in the parking lot, a human resources officer observing staff leaving work saw that the defendant was carrying large items in his backpack. The officer demanded the defendant to open his backpack, revealing the stolen packets of chicken wings.

A police report was lodged, prompting investigations in which the defendant admitted to stealing the chicken worth just below BND80, and that it was meant for his own consumption.

Chief Magistrate Pengiran Masni binti Pengiran Haji Bahar presided over the case.
