Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong appointed Court Room 5F in the Singapore Supreme Court building as a Court of the Brunei High Court for the duration of the trial of HCCS No 47 of 2018 – ICE Petroleum Engineering Sdn Bhd (formerly known as PT Technic Engineering Sdn Bhd) vs Sahid Sdn Bhd.

The trial of HCCS No 47 of 2018 was conducted virtually from October 12 to 15 and will reconvene from October 19 to 22.

Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, Justice Kannan Ramesh will hear the case in Singapore, with counsel in Brunei Darussalam and witnesses in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia appearing via video link.

The case concerns a contractual dispute between a Bruneian company and a Malaysian company and relates to a joint venture involving a multimillion dollar project.

The Chief Justice’s Chambers also said this cross-border hearing is possible because of the close judicial cooperation between the Brunei Supreme Court and its Singaporean counterpart and underscores the special relationship between the two nations. “With the use of technology, the Brunei High Court is continuing its mission to deliver justice efficiently and expeditiously in the ‘new normal’ environment of the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Chief Justice said.
