17-year-old missing, feared drowned

A 17-year-old boy is reported missing and feared drowned at a river in Kampong Tanjong Maya, Tutong on Sunday morning, while rescuers continued a search for him yesterday.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department (FRD), 12 firefighters led by ABK 177 Francis from Tutong Fire Station of Operation ‘E’ Branch and diving unit of the FRD responded to the incident after receiving a distress call at 11.39am.

After arriving at the scene, FRD personnel used Aquatic Search and Recovery Equipment to try to locate the victim in the water, believed to have drowned.

The search operation was suspended due to bad weather on Sunday. The operation resumed yesterday and at press time, the victim has yet to be found.

The FRD reminded the public to get updates on the weather condition frequently and to check the condition of their boat before travelling. Passenger and boat operators were urged to always wear life jackets and comply with regulations to ensure safety.
