The Magistrate’s Court handed a six-month jail sentence to a local woman who pleaded guilty last Saturday to stealing a pair of shoes, aided by a man who is still at large.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Firdaus bin Mohammad informed the court that on September 5, Haslina binti Mohd Sufri, 34, was giving a ride home to a man named Boi, who missed his bus.

However, on the way to Boi’s house, the defendant stopped at the roadside before an unfenced residence at STKRJ Kampong Lorong 3 Selatan, Seria, instructing him to steal a pair of Nike Tempo shoes which were left outside.

They fled the scene and went to the defendant’s house where Boi refused to follow her anymore and walked away.

The defendant took the shoes and hid them under her bed.

The following day, the owner, on discovering the theft, went through CCTV footage and saw Boi stealing the shoes.

He showed the footage to the police while filing a report. This led to the defendant’s arrest. Investigations concluded that the defendant intended to sell the stolen shoes so that she could afford to go to Bandar Seri Begawan.

Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid found the defendant lacking in remorse considering her previous convictions for similar offences.

“Public interest is of paramount consideration (and) apart from her guilty plea, recovery of stolen items, there is nothing more to be said in her favour,” said the court while handing
the sentence.
