A 54-year-old local man, who had been on a crime binge since 1981, was sentenced to 16 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for theft.

Kifli bin Tuah pleaded guilty to the charge levelled by DPP Hajah Siti Mu’izzah binti Haji Sabli.

The prosecution revealed that the defendant travelled on a bus to a department store in Kiulap at 4pm on August 8 where he came across an unattended shopping trolley with a handbag in it.

He took the mobile phone in the handbag and placed it in his pocket before paying for his purchases at the counter.

He took the bus destined for the bus station in the capital when he realised that the phone was password protected.

Disappointed, he sold the phone to a person for BND30 as he got off the bus at the station.
On the same day, the victim realised her phone had gone missing and filed a police report.

Investigations aided by a CCTV footage at the department store showed the defendant in action.

Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman took the defendant’s long list of similar convictions in the past into account when considering a fitting punishment.
