The Brunei Students’ Union (BSU) collaborated with the Brunei Religious Officers Student Association (BruROSA) to hold its annual outreach tour with the theme ‘Paving Your Path: Journeys Through Perseverance.’
The programme was conducted in three institutions – Sayyidina Ali Secondary School (SMSA), Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS) and Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre (PTES) on August 31, September 7 and 8.
The outreach tour aimed to motivate the students to cogitate and pursue their future career pathways.
This is done by inviting individuals, each with different academic backgrounds and career pathways as guest speakers. The programme also provided a platform where students could voice their future concerns or current hardships.
The outreach tour set off its course on August 31, with the participation of 123 SMSA students. The tour started with a series of ice breaking games and inspirational talks by four speakers – Cindy Sim from BSU, Abdul Rahman from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Chai Roslin from InTurn Co and Hazwan from Gentleman Stitch.
Both Sim and Abdul Rahman shared their experiences as ‘A’ Levels students and their enrolments in university.
Chai Roslin and Hazwan presented their struggles as an entrepreneurs, and the reality of starting up a business.
The next tour at MSPSBS started with opening remarks from BSU President Abdullah Umar and BruROSA President Zakwan, followed by an ‘Amazing Race’ with the participation of 154 students.
Later, a forum titled ‘Journeys Through Perseverance’ began, involving six speakers: Dina Roslan and Darren Pui from BSU, Shahzaad Aslam and Mariam Yunos from UBD Students Association (PMUBD), Waznah Ghazali from WeCare, and Shahirah Bakar from both Youth Community Transformation Club (KKBT) and Dai’e Youth.
Representatives from BSU and PMUBD shared their struggles as a student and how they persevered through it, while Waznah and Shahirah talked about their experiences in volunteering. Shahirah also touched on her experience with depression as a student, and how she overcame it.
On September 8, the outreach tour reached its finale with a participation of 91 students from PTES. The highlight of the tour was the inspirational talks from Vanessa Ang from BSU and Afiq Izzuddin from PMUBD.
Titled ‘I am more capable than what I give myself credit for’, Vanessa spoke about academic motivations. Afiq gave a speech titled ‘Life is one amazing journey!’ exploring the issue of mental health awareness, and how he overcame his struggles.
The tour concluded with a sharing session for the students to convey their problems and receive proper guidance.
