A notorious cable thief causing a BND45,000 loss to the government was sentenced to seven years and four months’ jail with three whipping last Monday, after pleading guilty to 26 charges. Rusazmandi bin Abu Bakar, 36, was ordered to compensate the amount to the government or risk serving an additional six months’ jail.
Intermediate Court Judge Muhammed Faisal bin Pehin Dato Haji Kefli arrived on his decision after taking into account all circumstances of the case.
DPP Hajah Siti Mu’izzah binti Haji Sabli revealed that the defendant had attempted theft; committed theft; mischief and trespass by stealing, cutting, damaging and selling off cables taken from underground, fuse boxes, street lights, substations and electrical towers all around Tutong between April and August.
At one point, he left the whole stretch of the Tutong highway in the dark without proper working street lights.
It was on the morning of August 4 that a police patrol noticed the defendant digging in the ground. He was approached and eventually arrested.
