Mindspace outdid their fellow nine pitching teams at the Teens in AI Brunei Demo Day while Balmy took the second spot and Little Banker came in third.
A total of 10 teams comprising bright-minded teenagers pitched their ideas to a panel of industry-leading executives at the Design & Technology Building in Anggerek Desa Technology Park yesterday.
The Teens in AI Brunei Demo Day was officiated by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah.
Prior to the pitching session by the participants, a video presentation on AI for Good Hackathon was previewed.
The first prize was presented by Corporate Manager at Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) Haji Jaafar bin Haji Bakar and Acting CEO at DARe (Darussalam Enterprise) Daniel Leong.
Second prize was presented by Baiduri Bank’s Chief Technical Officer Simon Hansman and Brunei Shell Marketing Company Sdn Bhd (BSM) Managing Director Muhammad Norshafiee bin Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil.
The third prize was presented by Dynamik Technologies CEO Haslina binti Haji Mohd Taib and Acting Chief Executive of Authority for Info-communications and Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) Pengiran Haji Mohd Zain bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Razak.
Prior to the pitching, teams were engaged in the pilot hackathon, conducted virtually through platforms such as YouTube, Zoom and Discord where the students tuned into workshops and talks by industry experts. They also benefitted from mentorship sessions by experts from business, design thinking and technology.
A total of 53 students aged between of 14 to 16 years from public schools and Jerudong International School (JIS) participated in the hackathon, guided by 20 teachers and 36 mentors from different industries.
The programme aims to provide a platform to shape the skills and knowledge of teenagers as part of Brunei Darussalam’s 4th Industrial Revolution aspirations which envisions a sustainable, collaborative start-up ecosystem that supports innovation and growth.
The Teens in AI programme will continue in 2021 with a cross-school hackathon, involving up to 500 students, and conclude with a final hackathon participated by the top two teams from each school.
BSP, Baiduri Bank Berhad, BSM and Dynamik Technologies are the main sponsors for the Teens in AI programme. The local delivery partner is InTurn Co while DARe and AITI are the ecosystem and strategic partners. STEP Centre of the Ministry of Education and JIS are community partners.
