A local man who caused a commotion by sitting on the edge of a bridge was arraigned in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday ending up with an order to settle a fine of BND1,500.

Muhammad Azami bin Awang Umar, 30, seemingly was about to commit suicide by jumping off the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha bridge at 8.25 pm on September 3.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of causing public nuisance with his act, causing annoyance to the public who had occasion to use the bridge.

He would have to serve a month’s jail in default of payment of the fine by September 30.

DPP Raihan Nabilah Ahmad Ghazali informed Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid that the defendant was dealing with a personal issue and felt stressed out.

That evening he walked from Kampong Setia ‘A’ towards the bridge where he climbed over the railing and sat on the edge attracting crowds of people.

A member of the public then made a distress call to the Fire and Rescue Department who arrived moments later.

Personnel tried coaxing the defendant to move away from the edge but, to no avail.

Shortly after, the defendant’s girlfriend came to the scene and tried to talk him into, in which in the midst, personnel took advantage of the distraction and grabbed the defendant, pulling him back onto the bridge.

He was then handed over to the police at the scene.

  • Clarification – The earlier version of this article’s headline was changed to clarify that the man was charged with causing public nuisance and not of a suicide attempt as the article may have suggested
