The Magistrate’s Court yesterday handed a 10 months’ jail sentence to a local man who pleaded guilty to cheating a workshop attendant while a co-defendant denied the same allegation.
Haidi bin Haji Panjang, 45, cheated a female attendant at a tyre shop in Kampong Sengkarai, Tutong at 1.30pm on March 27, 2018, making her believe that he will pay for the purchases of four pieces of sport rims, four pieces of tyres, 16 pieces of locknuts and a bottle of motor oil.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Hajaj ‘Adzimah Mukarramah binti Haji Salleh informed Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid that after the defendant pretended to purchase all the items, and the wheels to his car were fitted, he told the attendant a person in another car will arrive to pay for the BND923 bill.
Ten minutes later, the defendant walked out of the store and fled the scene.
The workers were alerted by the attendant who said that the defendant had not paid for his purchases and they attempted to give a chase.
A police report was lodged immediately and investigations led to the defendant’s arrest.
As 42-year-old Sardini bin Mohd Salleh denied the same charge, the court fixed trial to run from February 22, 2021.
