A man who carried a home-made rifle in his car was sentenced to six years and six months’ imprisonment with three canings after he failed to prove his innocence during a trial yesterday.
Judge Pengiran Hajah Norismayanti binti Pengiran Haji Ismail found Deputy Public Prosecutor Affyian Abdul Rahman had proven the case beyond the court’s reasonable doubt.
The court’s findings included the Narcotics Control Bureau’s (NCB) apprehension of Michells Jackson anak Awil on May 11, 2019 at an address in Bengkuru, Kampong Kuala Ungar.
The NCB officers raided the location suspecting drug activities and instead found a black plastic bag containing a metal rod and a butt of a weapon with a green plastic bottle containing lead pellets.
The court found that the defendant had possessed the rifle without a licence.
During the arrest, the defendant claimed that the weapon was used to scare monkeys away and later at the trial, evidence showed that he had kept the weapon out of anyone’s sight for his late friend.
