Three men were given jail and caning sentences last Saturday, after pleading guilty to theft of government property and charges related to it.

Magistrate Mohammad Marzuqi bin Sabtu sentenced Mohammad Alizul bin Ahmad, 37, and Abdul Sadiy bin Muhammad Junaidi, 27, to eight months’ jail and two canings each, while Junaidi bin Damit, 41, received six months’ jail and two canings.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Hajah Siti Mu’izzah binti Haji Sabli revealed in court how Mohammad Alizul and Abdul Sadiy stole a gate railing at a substation on Jalan Subok at 5am on August 9. After prying the railing loose using tools they brought, they sold it to a scrap yard.

The next day, between noon and 3pm, the three men attempted to steal eight gate railings near Simpang 67 in Kampong Subok. After prying the gate railings loose, they hid them in
nearby bushes.

They cut some poles attached to the gate railings with the intent to steal, when they noticed police officers heading towards them.

They dispersed to hide in the bushes, but Junaidi was unable to get away and was apprehended by the police.

Mohammad Alizul and Abdul Sadiy hid in the bushes for some time and eventually came out, thinking the coast was clear. However, they were spotted by residents, who apprehended and handed them over to the police.

The two other charges state that the men committed mischief, by causing damage in the course of the two incidents.
