The Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB), Ministry of Finance and Economy, held a briefing session disseminating information and understanding on Brunei’s economic statistics and development among academic members at Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) recently.

Delivering the briefing were the BEDB Assistant Chief Executive Officer Abdurrahman bin Abdul Aziz and Executive Officer Samantha binti Haji Ali.

Also present was Rector of UNISSA Dr Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal alongside the deputy rector, assistant rectors and officers.

The briefing allowed attendees to interact and create bilateral discussions on economic issues that are in need of continuous commitment by various parties. Representatives from BEDB also shared the organisation’s roles in realising Brunei Vision 2035 that aims to make Brunei Darussalam a country that is economically dynamic and resilient among the top 10 countries in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) per capita.

This is included in BEDB’s responsibility where Brunei Darussalam is seen as an attractive investment destination for foreign direct investment (FDI).

Currently, BEBD has managed to attract several foreign investments and the biggest so far is with Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd through the Pulau Muara Besar Project. Through this FDI, it has directly offered jobs for local youth and this is an important aspect in dealing with the problem of unemployment which is a major issue.

In this regard, BEDB also welcomed the cooperation and thoughts of academics in helping to improve the country’s economy and the oil and gas sector.
