A 38-year-old local man was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, for stealing a mobile phone from a shop in the Sengkurong commercial area.

Mohammed Zulzamrin bin Zulkifli pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted by Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Sabrina binti Haji Mahmud’s facts of the case stated that on August 15, the defendant had asked a friend for a ride to the Sengkurong commercial area. On arriving there after 1.30pm, the defendant told his friend to wait for him at the car park.

Wearing a black cap and a face mask, the defendant went to a mobile phone shop, where he asked a salesgirl to show him a blue-coloured 32GB Realme C3 phone kept inside the
display glass.

The salesgirl assisted the defendant, but as soon as she handed him the mobile phone, he ran out of the shop with it.

She ran after the defendant, while shouting for help. Two employees in the area also gave chase to the defendant and managed to apprehend him near a bus stop.

Another member of the public also assisted, by retrieving the stolen phone from the defendant’s pocket.

The defendant was handed over to the police following a report, and investigations were conducted with evidences from the victim, eyewitnesses and the people who came to the victim’s aid, as well as CCTV footage from the mobile phone shop.

Magistrate, during the sentencing, highlighted that the defendant had planned to commit the offence: “He was ready with a black cap and a facial mask, to conceal his identity,” which was also admitted by the defendant.

The court also highlighted that the mobile phone would not have been recovered without assistance from the public, which called for a custodial sentence to stop the defendant and deter others.
