A local man was sentenced to two years and six months’ imprisonment with one whipping by the Intermediate Court yesterday after pleading guilty to committing theft and mischief at the Kampong Tanah Jambu Mosque last week.
“The offence was pre-meditated as the defendant was equipped with a metal wire and rat glue to fish monies out from the donation box. However, since he was unable to get the money, he used a metal chair inside the mosque to pry open the donation box, causing damage. The mosque has to bear cost of repair or replacement,” said Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Sabrina binti Haji Mahmud.
The DPP said there was an abuse in the family trust when he stole a mobile phone from his brother-in-law’s house, supposedly to be a safe place of custody for the victim and his family.
“The defendant blatantly stole the mobile phone belonging to the victim, failed to return the stolen item at the first instant. It was only upon the confrontation and insistence of the victim and his wife the following day did he surrender the stolen item,” said the DPP.
The court was also informed that the defendant is a repeat offender, having his last offence in 2009, and that the defendant is not new to the criminal justice system especially in theft related offences since 1996.
