Man arrested for trafficking drug from Laos to Vietnam

HANOI (XINHUA) – Police of Vietnam’s central highlands Dak Lak province have arrested a local man for trafficking 2.8kg of drugs from Laos to the country, Vietnam News Agency reported yesterday.

The 53-year-old man was caught red-handed transporting the illicit drugs in Cu M’Gar district on Wednesday night. He confessed that he is a drug addict and had travelled to Laos several times to buy drugs and bring back to Vietnam for both use and re-sale, the news agency reported, noting that further investigation is underway.

According to Vietnamese law, those convicted of smuggling over 600 grammes of heroin or more than 2.5kg of methamphetamine are punishable by death. Making or trading 100 grammes of heroin or 300 grammes of other illegal drugs also faces death penalty.
