A local man was sentenced to 16 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court after he pleaded guilty to a charge of auto theft yesterday.

Magistrate Mohammad Marzuqi bin Sabtu handed the sentence to Mohammad Sofri bin Zaini/Sinen, 41, who committed the offence on August 14.

DPP Aeny Zullizam informed court that the defendant met a friend who asked for help to look for a Toyota Kijang. As he travelled by car between 2-6am along Kampong Delima, he passed a house with a Toyota Kijang parked in the compound. He parked his car and entered the compound.

He opened the Toyota Kijang door which was left unlocked and started its engine using his own car key. He later met his friend and sold it for BND200.

The car owner realised his car was missing that morning, lodged a police report leading to the defendant’s arrest and recovery of the stolen car.
