A 46-year-old permanent resident was jailed for six months after he pleaded guilty last Saturday to a solo attempt at cable theft.
Senior Magistrate Hajah Azrimah binti Haji Abdul Rahman, on sentencing Abdul Shariff bin Nohamad, said since he committed a serious offence, a custodial sentence was called for to punish him, as well as deter others from committing the same.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Hajah Siti Mu’izzah binti Haji Sabli informed court that the defendant made the attempt at the Mentiri Post Office at 11.30pm on August 12.
Armed with tools, he started cutting the earth cables in an area where the ground was dug up.
When he saw a few people approaching him, he panicked and attempted to flee. However, he fell before he could make a getaway, and police personnel arrested him.
