The Magistrate’s Court handed a jail term and a fine to a 45-year-old local man for charges of theft and consuming drugs yesterday.

Romei bin Abdul Rahman pleaded guilty to the charges of stealing 15 metres of underground cables from an open field near Substation 22 on Jalan Binglu Tengah, Kampong Tanah Jambu sometime between January and June and consuming methylamphetamine on January 16, 2013.

Charges which he denied earlier were withdrawn by the prosecution yesterday.

On sentencing the defendant to 12 months’ jail while ordering him to settle a BND1,000 fine, or serve another two months’ jail in default of payment, Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman “treated the defendant as a first offender for theft against property and consuming drugs,” however, took into consideration the amount of damage caused in the theft of cables belonging to the government in the amount of BND8,400, sold it to benefit himself and that the theft of cables is a serious offence as it is prevalent now.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Firdaus bin Mohammad prosecuted the case.
