July 10, 2005 – The December 26 tsunami tragedy is a historic event that affected every member of the countries that were hit by the killer tidal waves. It provides us many lessons about the powers of Allah the Almighty.

This was said by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awang Haji Mohammad bin Haji Daud in his capacity as guest of honour during the launch of a book entitled Tsunami: Satu I’tibar, which was held at the Darulifta Building of the State Mufti’s Office.

Tsunami: Satu I’tibar was written by State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned and was published by the State Mufti Office at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Present as the auspicious event were senior government officials and distinguished guests.

The guest of honour explained that Tsunami: Satu I’tibar would be very useful as a reference book and history record in terms of contributions and commitments made by both the ruler and the country towards the regional and international countries affected by the tsunami, particularly Banda Aceh, Indonesia.

The contents of this book aim to upgrade our awareness and thoughts about the power, test, reminder and warning made by Allah the Almighty towards human beings who are ignorant of their religious obligations, and unappreciative of the pleasures given to them by Allah the Almighty.

The guest of honour also added that dozens of group – including volunteers, doctors, nurses and other medical and health manpower under the initiative of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation, Ministry of Health, Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Royal Brunei Airlines, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Brunei Darussalam Scouts Association – departed to Banda Aceh in a bid to implement rescue operations and to disseminate the country’s donations to the affected area.

He added that the highlight of our commitment was His Majesty’s arrival to Banda Aceh on February 1, where the monarch saw first hand the hardship and misery faced by the victims, in addition to meeting Brunei volunteers who were there to assist the thousands of affected victims.

July 1, 2010 – Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, led a handful of volunteers to officiate a harvesting ceremony at the 170-hectare Agriculture Development Area of Batong Paddy Planting Project in Mukim Pengkalan Batu yesterday.

Officiated by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on March 15, 2010, the Agriculture Development Area of Batong Paddy Planting Project is expected to yield between two and three metric tonnes per hectare.

The area was a joint project in paddy cultivatin between the Yulin Municipal Government, Guangxi, China and His Majesty’s Government who introduce the ‘parachute rice transplanting technique’ in mid-May this year.

In an interview with the Bulletin, Penghulu of Mukim Pengkalan Batu Haji Tahir Haji Tarip, lauded the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, for implementing strategies to increase rice production and getting students involved in the harvesting ceremony.

“This is a significant step by His Majesty’s Government in introducing the latest technology and mechanism in agriculture. This will greatly help in upgrading the existing entrepreneurs,” he said.

The harvesting ceremony was in line with the national food security drive to increase rice production to 20 per cent in 2010 and subsequently 60 per cent in 2015, an ambitious goal that has repeatedly been mentioned in His Majesty’s past titahs.
