LegCo members attend ASEAN dialogue on waste management

Legislative Council (LegCo) members Yang Berhormat Khairunnisa binti Haji Ash’ari and Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Ali bin Pengiran Maon yesterday attended a joint dialogue on waste management, organised by the ASEAN Secretariat Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) and Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA).

The meeting was a follow-up of a resolution approved during the 40th AIPA General Assembly in Bangkok, Thailand last year for AIPA and ERIA to establish bilateral cooperation to support waste management for sustainable development.

Yesterday’s dialogue was aimed for members of parliaments and experts to discuss waste management issues in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and effective ways in managing waste to reduce community spread of epidemics. Additional objectives include raising public awareness on current issues in the management of solid, medical and clinical wastes in Southeast Asia.

The session held at the Department of Councils of State building was also joined by Secretary to the Cabinet Minister’s Council and Clerk to the LegCo Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Jaya Dato Paduka Haji Judin bin Haji Asar, other LegCo members and officers from the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe).

Meanwhile, the experts panel comprised Dr Enri Damanhuri of Bandung Technology Institute in Indonesia, Senior Economist at ERIA Michikazu Kojima, Professor Jeffery Sachs of the Centre on Sustainable Development at Sunway University, and Dr Agamuthu Periathamby of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology.

The session opened and closed with remarks from ERIA President Hidetoshi Nishimura.

Also present to deliver a speech was AIPA Secretary-General Nguyen Tuong Van.
