An attempt to smuggle 478 cartons of cigarettes into the country was foiled during the ‘Operasi Sepadu COVID-19’ joint operation on Thursday.

Company ‘C’ Police Reserve Unit personnel under the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) and Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) officers participated in the operation.

The contraband was found at a mouse trail area in Kuala Lurah while the officers were patrolling the borders, a RBPF release said. Items believed to have been used to smuggle the cigarettes were also found at the scene.

The evidence and the contraband were brought to the Limau Manis Police Station. The Royal Customs and Excise Department are conducting further investigations.

The RBPF and other enforcement agencies will always strengthen the capabilities to combat, trace and address issues related to cross-border crime, the release added.
