The hoisting of a giant-sized Brunei Darussalam national flag marked the start of nationwide celebrations for the 74th birthday of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, who is also the Chairperson of the Executive Committee for His Majesty’s 74th Birthday Celebration, was guest of honour in the ceremony at the open area of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex yesterday.
Deputy co-chairpersons as well as co-secretaries of the Executive Committee for His Majesty’s 74th Birthday Celebration and districts officers of each district were also in attendance.
The flag measuring 3.7m by 7.5m was hoisted by 20 Royal Brunei Navy personnel accompanied by the national anthem Allah Peliharakan Sultan.
The guest of honour then presented the national flags and posters to the district officers – Brunei-Muara District Officer Misle bin Haji Abdul Karim, Belait District Officer Ramlee bin Haji Jamudin, Tutong District Officer Shamsul Bahrin bin Haji Mohd Hussain and Acting Temburong District Officer Pengiran Muhammad Ameer Mubaarak bin Pengiran Haji Hashim.
Similar flag hoisting and handing over ceremonies were also held in each district.
Permanent Secretary (Policy and Fiscal) at the Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE) Hajah Norliah binti Haji Kula was the guest of honour in the ceremony at Brunei-Muara District Office.
She handed over the flag which was hoisted by Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) personnel. The ceremony continued with the presentation of flags to penghulus, associations, private companies and non-governmental associations (NGOs).
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) Haji Mohammed Rosli bin Haji Ibrahim was the guest of honour in the event at Menara Cendera Kenangan, Kuala Belait.The ceremony began with a recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat by Imam of Kampung Sungai Teraban Mosque Hilmi bin Yakop.
The Belait District Officer handed over the flag to the permanent secretary who passed it to RBPF personnel. The flag was hoisted with the singing of the national anthem.
The event continued with the guest of honour handing over flags to penghulus and village heads.Members of Legislative Council (LegCo), Penghulu of Mukim Liang Yang Berhormat Haji Abdul Hamid bin Haji Mumin and Acting Penghulu of Mukim Labi Yang Berhormat Hanapi bin Mohd Siput, staff members from government departments and agencies in Belait District were also present.
A flag hoisting ceremony was also held at Mukim Labi Government Building attended by members of the Mukim and Village Consultative Council (MPMK) Labi as well as residents from the surrounding area. Yang Berhormat Hanapi witnessed the event.
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dato Paduka Haji Mohamed Nor bin Haji Jeludin was the guest of honour in the event at Tutong Distric Civic Centre Complex.
The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa by Head Imam of Kampong Tanjong Maya Mosque Mohd Latif bin Zaini.
The Tutong District Officer then handed over the flag to the guest of honour who passed it to RBPF personnel who hoisted the flag accompanied with the singing of the national anthem. The event concluded with the presentation of flags to penghulus of the mukims in the Tutong District.
Members of LegCo, Penghulu of Mukim Tanjong Maya and Acting Penghulu of Mukim Pekan Tutong Yang Berhormat Haji Abdul Wahab bin Apong and Penghulu of Mukim Telisai Yang Berhormat Haji Ramli bin Haji Lahit were present to receive the flags.
Penghulu of Mukim Lamunin and Acting Penghulu of Mukim Rambai Haji Tujoh bin Talip, Acting Penghulu of Mukim Kiudang Major (Rtd) Said bin Haji Tinggal and Acting Penghulu of Mukim Keriam Haji Burhanuddin bin Haji Hashim also received the flags.
LegCo member Yang Berhormat Haji Umarali bin Esung and officials from several government offices witnessed the event.
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof was the guest of honour at the event held in Temburong District.
The giant-sized national flag will be flying high at the heart of the capital until July 22.
Brunei residents, pengiran-pengiran and those bestowed with titles are required to fly the national flag or personal flags from today until July 22.
