Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar yesterday expressed gratitude to the donors who helped the Brunei Government tackle the COVID-19 outbreak by contributing to the COVID-19 Relief Fund, which will close tomorrow.

In an interview on the sidelines of a donation ceremony at the Ministry of Health (MoH) building, the minister said, “Despite being a small population, we collected a large amount of contributions, which shows how caring and generous Bruneians are.

“The COVID-19 Relief Fund has made a great impact in the country, especially with most of the funds going towards the funding of a new National Isolation Centre. This is a unique hospital built by the people.

“Alhamdulillah, we are very proud to be Bruneian under the charge of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in ensuring that everyone is well-looked after, with access to healthcare, and there has been no compromise on this.”

He added, “The public needs to continue being socially responsible, as Brunei Darussalam is not out of the woods yet in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic. We need to look after each other when we de-escalate to the new norm.”

Meanwhile, BND3,946 was contributed by MoH staff for the COVID-19 Relief Fund, which the minister received from Permanent Secretary at the MoH Haji Abdul Manap bin Othman.

Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham also received BND2,081.90 from Modasys Technology, Radio Television Brunei (RTB), Progresif Sdn Bhd and Kristal FM, presented by Executive Director of Modasys Technology Haji Mohamad Fawzi bin Haji Zainal Abidin, and Public Relations Officer of RTB Md Mahdi bin Haji Md Yassin.

The Belait District Senior Citizens Association donated BND600 to the fund, presented by the association’s Chair of the Committee for Works and Activities Haji David bin Haji Kassim.

The minister also received BND1,500 from the sales proceeds of a Bruneian-made t-shirt series dubbed ‘Social-Distancing’ (SD), printed by Wisa Enterprise and featuring original designs by Paperplane Design founder Mohd Abdul Aziz bin Haji Mohd Ali, whose previous work included designing the 36th National Day logo.

For every t-shirt sold, BND1 was donated to the COVID-19 Relief Fund. The donation was presented by Mohd Abdul Aziz and Executive Director of Wisa Enterprise Hajah Juliana binti Haji Nawi, along with representatives of Memorito, a local agent entrusted with the distribution and delivery of the SD t-shirts.

Hajah Juliana said the t-shirts are a “great symbol” of the community spirit in supporting the frontliners. She expressed her gratitude to all those who showed their support.
